Greater Los Angeles-Area Wildfire Resources for Homeowners
CAI’s community of volunteer homeowners leaders, community association managers, and business partners are devastated by the Los Angeles area wildfires. The devastation stemming from multiple wildfires in Southern California are impacting community associations of all sizes and types in the Greater Los Angeles area.
Our community is here to support and provide resources for our friends and family within our community impacted by this devasting natural disaster. Below we’ve gathered information on current state, local, and federal responses and resources to assist with the difficult task of navigating and sustaining safety and initial recovery surrounding this emergency.
Federal Government Responses and Resources
During a press conference on Thursday, Jan. 10, President Biden announced the federal government will fund 100% of disaster response costs associated with the wildfires including debris removal, setting up temporary shelters, and compensating first responders. FEMA also has officially opened its portal for victims of the wildfires to directly apply for federal assistance here.
State Government Responses and Resources
Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency on Jan. 7, permitting all state government agencies to utilize and employ state personnel, equipment, and facilities to perform activities consistent with the direction of the Office of Emergency Services and the state emergency plan. Insurance Related Responses
On Jan. 9, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara announced a one-year moratorium on home insurance cancellations and nonrenewals in areas impacted by the Palisades and Eaton Wildfires, determined by zip code. Find more information here.
Continuing Advocacy Efforts in Response to this Disaster
CAI will continue to advocate to ensure that government resources are available to affected communities. This includes advocating to obtain a presidential disaster declaration that include provisions for debris removal from private roads in community associations. We are engaging with Newsom’s office and California’s congressional delegation to secure vital resources for recovery efforts.
CAI, California chapters, especially the Greater Los Angeles Chapter, and the California Legislative Action continue to collaborate to help.
