How Can I Keep our Community Pool Water Safe?

Q. We have a pool that’s open year-round — and usually packed with residents! While we love this community gathering place, we’re concerned about keeping the pool water safe for everyone. What steps should we take to ensure everyone’s health and safety?

Great question. Community managers know how beloved yet expensive — and time consuming — pool maintenance can be. Here are a few tips to protect pool goers:

  1. Be diligent about hygiene. Remind swimmers to not swallow pool water. Don’t let pets into the pool or pool area. And remind residents to stay out of the water if they have an infection or illness. Probably most importantly, be sure to have a contingency plan that can be implemented immediately if something does contaminate the water.
  2. Be aware. A professional should be checking the chlorine and pH levels often, especially during periods of heavy use. The pool pumps and filtration systems are in good repair and operating as they should.
